Brandon Drown – Director of Academics
Director of Special Education

Growing up I never wanted to become a teacher, a learner or a leader. But after a few well placed nudges from a friend and mentor, a summer volunteering with students with disabilities, and I was hooked. As an educator I firmly believe that we are all teachers and learners simultaneously and that everyone can participate in this process. I love that teaching is not a static art; it is an ever-changing process. It is because it is not static, because I have to constantly learn that I will always be an educator.

A graduate of the University of Utah, I hold a Bachelors of Science in education with an endorsement in Special Education and a Masters of Education with an endorsement in administration.

My academic and career interests center on my belief and experience that every child can succeed in school. However, significant economic, social, emotional, behavioral, and systemic barriers make success more difficult for many students, and are not adequately addressed in the present public school environment. Throughout my career, I have promoted an inclusion model, where students with disabilities are given the opportunity to be educated with their peers. Academically I would like to continue exploring ways to promote and support every student. I believe this can be accomplished by being a facilitator, mentor and leader in both the community, and school environment.

I have worked as a Special Educator, instructor, and teacher in various positions for close to fifteen years. I have worked in both Murray and Jordan School Districts. I worked as an elementary para-educator for both districts and as a full-time teacher at Riverview Jr. High, in Murray. In April of 2010, I took on an additional part-time teaching role at Stillwater Academy. Working at Stillwater has allowed me to expand my understanding of behavior, therapy and has given me the opportunity to serve as a principal and leader.

Natalia Davis - Housing Director

Natalia Davis has been involved with Stillwater Academy since 2011. She was introduced to the program when a family member participated in the program and had healing and great success. Natalia comes with various types of job experience but they all involved working with people. She says, "People are my thing." She and her husband Nate were part of our housing staff for over 5 years. She says that one of her favorite things about housing was witnessing the transformation of the kids. She loves to see them develop new tools, and most importantly learn how to use them. She has wonderful memories of cooking with the Stillwater students. Some other activities she enjoys are back packing and spending time with her husband and her two beautiful little girls. She was born and raised in Argentina but met her husband Nathan here in the states. She enjoys her most recent roll of being the Housing Director. She loves working for Stillwater because she believes in the program. She says she has learned so much and is still growing as a person.

Dave is one of those guys who can fix anything. His employment experience includes farming, and various kinds of construction. And he's trained horses and worked with youth as a volunteer all of his life. His skills are well used at the farm.

He grew up in Murray, Utah and is one of 8 kids. He and his wife Dennese are what we call the heart of Stillwater. They both work for us and house for us. Tatiana & Justin Truong

Tatiana and Justin Truong have known each other since high school and married since 2013. Justin is a mechanical engineer and enjoys a vast array of hobbies. Some of his hobbies are his aquarium, falconry, playing video games, and hockey. Tatiana enjoys dancing, working out and learning about nutrition and health. They have a toddler named Calvin who loves Lion King and eating anything crunchy. We love housing to help support the students with a safe and welcoming home to help them through the difficulties of the program.

Keisha & Race Sawyer

I started housing at the young age of six. Yes, you read that right, six years old. My dad was a family therapist for a State program at the time. I got to meet a lot of great people. My favorite was RuthAnne. She had an original Nintendo and would let me and my brother play it. She was the coolest. It was my normal to have "strangers" live with us growing up.

I worked in a number of treatment centers and programs in the Salt Lake area when I was in school and getting my LSAC (Licensed Substance Abuse Councilor). A couple of years after I got married to Keshia, my beautiful wife of 11 years, we started working as house parents at a "Girls Home" providing full time care for 7 students. It was a step down program from a residential treatment. It was a great experience, and we learned a lot, but what we really wanted to do was work with kids to get them back to their own families. That's why we switched over to Stillwater; the goal seems to be more focused on healing the family than "fixing" the kid.

We have three kids: Faith, Ran, and Rider. They keep us busy with many activities including dance, football, and wrestling. Keshia is really all things fitness. She is a personal trainer, an Ironman , and a Boston qualifier runner. I stay busy with combat sports like Boxing and MMA. We love to take the girls into the beautiful mountains for hikes on the weekends and some of our best memories are board games after dinner.

Jerry & Janie Brown

Janie Brown loves youth and believes there is no such thing as a "bad" kid. She grew up on a farm in Tempe, Arizona and has worked most of her life with teens through camps, high adventure hiking, canoeing, scuba diving, sailing, church youth organizations and outdoor survival programs. She graduated from Brigham Young University with a degree in Outdoor Education and Elementary Education. Jerry Brown grew up in Connecticut and after a 2 year mission to Italy, attended and graduated from Brigham Young University in Electrical Engineering. Jerry worked many years with teens in Boy Scouts and also helped establish a summer weekend sailing club. He loves big game fishing, scuba diving, skiing, boating and sailing through the islands. Janie loves being with her kids/grandkids, hiking, being outdoors, learning, jigsaw puzzles, reading and being with Jerry. Janie and Jerry have been married for nearly 40 years; have 8 children (2 sets of twins) and 20 grandkids.

Janie loves housing students at Stillwater. It is "the best thing since homemade sliced bread and keeps me young and on my toes!" Janie loves learning from the array of personalities, talents, enthusiasm, knowledge and fun characteristics of the students. Jerry has also enjoyed having students in their home – especially the experiences of walks, going to the park, building snowmen, seeing the lights in Salt Lake City, teaching them how to make homemade pasta, water fights and especially chocolate chip cookies on the weekends. They both feel it an honor to have opportunity to make a difference with Stillwater students.

Jerry is retired and cares for his 93 year old father in their home and Janie works at an Assisted Living facility in Sandy, Utah as a Life Enrichment Manager – working with memory care residents – providing activities and experiences to enhance their lives.

The Lollars have been housing since September of 2014 and really enjoy having the kids in their home. They love developing relationships with the kids, supporting them, and learning from them. They enjoy playing games, going on walks, watching wheel of fortune, and going to the theater with the kids.

Andrea & Steve Messer

Andrea and Steve have been married 26 years and have four children. They are originally from Florida.

They love to go camping and their favorite vacation spot is Disneyland. Andrea loves to cook and that is one of the favorite activities of the students that stay at her house. She is also an avid reader and is a great example to the Stillwater students in this aspect. She enjoys being out in nature and working in her yard. Steve and Andrea say that they love working as housing staff for Stillwater because they love helping the teens as they are working through their program. They feel that their lives are enhanced as they learn so much from the students as they work through their challenges. And their final reason for housing is that they love spending time with the students because they are just a lot of fun.

Dennesse & Dave Snarr

Dave and Dennese Snarr have been involved with Stillwater Academy for over 18 years. Dennese has worked in the office and Dave has worked as a Primary Counselor and as our Ranch Director. They bought a big old farm house adjacent to the farm and enjoy riding horses and teaching their housing clusters the basic life skills of farm living.

Dave loves to cook big chuck wagon meals, ride horses and hunt in the mountains. Dennese is all about service. Under her direction the student's take meals to the sick and the needy and make quilts for those in need. Many Sunday afternoons there house is filled with their large family of 6 kids and 24 grand kids.

The Stillwater students enjoy taking care of Dave's chicken's and pigs. The favorite activity is a fun bon fire at the fire pit in their back yard.

Erin & Darik Peterson

The Petersons are an energetic and creative couple who are excited to invite the Stillwater students into their home for the love and support that they need. Darik is a DOD contractor but for the last 10 years he worked on counter intelligence for the military. Erin is a Master Esthetician specializing in natural skin care. They are excited for the arrival of their first child, a baby boy.

The Petersons love all outdoor activities. They especially enjoy spending time in the mountains hiking and camping.

Their favorite Stillwater Student memory: They took the students with them to a family event over the Holiday. They played the silly game "Speak Out". You put mouth pieces in then try to convey an idea to your team. It was hilarious. Everyone laughed until they cried.

Heather & Phillip Goold

Allow us to introduce ourselves. Our names are Phil and Heather Goold. We have been housing for Stillwater Academy since 2009, when our own son was in the program.

Both of us are in medical sales.

We have 4 sons ranging in ages from 28-13. Our oldest son is a pilot for the Air Force, second son is a commercial film maker, third son does construction for a home flipper, and our youngest is still at home in 8th grade. Our Siberian Husky, Patches, is a favorite of the Turn About students who come to our home.

One of the things that Phil and I love to do together is to compete in marathons and triathlons. It gives a date every day as we workout together.

We are active in our church and community. Phil is currently a Scout Master for our son's troop. Heather teaches a youth Sunday school class. We also host a Thanksgiving day 5K that benefits the Utah Food Bank—so come join us and a few thousand participants if you can.

We enjoy housing because it feels nice to be a part of each student's progress. We visited a few programs before enrolling our own son at Stillwater. We felt that Stillwater housing program was a significant therapeutic difference compared to the dorm setting of other facilities.

Amanda & Ernesto Montanares

The Montanares have been involved with Stillwater academy for over 8 years. It all started when one of Amanda's family members participated in the program. They felt it was a great experience to see him learn and grow. After this experience they decided they would like to be a part of it.

Amanda was born and raised in Utah and Ernesto is from Chile and raised in Norway. Amanda has always worked in the restaurant business and Ernesto has worked in sales and as an instructor. They have three daughters. They love to work as housing staff because they enjoy seeing the positive benefits of the Stillwater Program work in the lives of the students.

When asked about their best memories with the still water students they said:
"BYU football games, roasting marshmallows and hot dogs up the canyon, playing soccer and family game nights every Sunday is always so fun when we have the clients in our home. We have seen the growth in lots of them and it is so incredible and rewarding. We have built some great relationships and friendships."

Lisa & Cliff Witham

We house because we love teenagers. We have been hosting exchange students from around the world for years and currently host two (one from Germany and one from South Korea). We love our Stillwater kids that we house and treat each of them as our own. Each holds a special place in our heart and we love to encourage and watch them grow in their program. To see them smile when they have accomplished moving to the next level or achieving something that they were scared of, is amazing.

We also have dogs that love the attention that they receive from all of the kids and that bring so much joy to our lives.

In our free time, we love to take our exchange students to visit National Parks and we love to drag race Volkswagens at different tracks around the United States.

Cliff's day job is a Superintendent for an international elevator company. Lisa is a former accountant for an elevator company but she now dedicates her full attention to her exchange students, Stillwater kids and animals.
